That was the secret of the salvation he brought, that was the light he shone into the darkness; and that was why they wanted to kill him. Because they preferred the darkness to the light.

About This Quote

In the novel The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien, he described a world ruled by a dark lord who had enslaved everyone and created a deep divide between those who were good and those who were evil. In this book, there is one character, Gandalf, who is a power-hungry wizard who is known as the White Wizard. One day he meets a man dressed in rags and begging for help.

Gandalf takes pity on him and offers to help him get back to his homeland. However, when they get there, they discover that there is no place like home anymore; it has been taken over by the dark lord’s army. Gandalf comes to realise that this man is actually Sauron, the great dark lord.

When he tries to get the man away from his army, he is killed by an orcish soldier. This gives Gandalf great pain because he feels that he failed to save the man from his fate.
